Silkworm and spider silk scaffolds for chondrocyte support   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Objective To create scaffolds with silkworm cocoon, spider egg sac and spider dragline silk fibres and examine their use for chondrocyte attachment and support. Methods Three different kinds of scaffolds were developed with Bombyx mori cocoon, Araneus diadematus egg sac and dragline silk fibres. The attachment of human articular cartilage cells were investigated on these bioprotein matrices. The chondrocytes produced an extracellular matrix which was studied by immunostaining. Moreover, the compression behaviour in relation to the porosity was studied. Results The compression modulus of a silkworm silk scaffold was related to its porosity. Chondrocytes were able to attach and to grow on the different fibres and in the scaffolds for several weeks while producing extracellular matrix products. Conclusion Porous scaffolds can be made out of silkworm and spider silk for cartilage regeneration. Mechanical properties are related to porosity and pore size of the construct. Cell spreading and cell expression depended on the porosity and pore-size.  相似文献

The development of new production lines of extruded ready-to-eat (RTE) snacks often results in high losses of edible food due to the trial-and-error approach in industry. Being able to predict extrudate characteristics of new formulations before having to run trials on industrial scale would be beneficial for reducing waste and having a more efficient development process. With this study, the correlation between pasting properties of seven blends of flours/starches and extrudate characteristics was investigated (100% corn grits, 25% and 50% replacement of corn grits with high amylose starch, potato starch, and rice flour). The predictive power of pasting characteristics on extrudate's moisture content, water absorption and solubility index, sectional expansion index (SEI) and hardness was studied. Results indicated the potential of predicting SEI, water solubility index (WSI), and water absorption index (WAI) of RTE-snacks. WSI and WAI were, respectively, negatively correlated with peak temperature (R2 = 0.897), and positively with peak temperature and positively with trough viscosity (R2 = 0.855). One can conclude that the rheometer can be a useful tool to gain insight into the characteristics of the extrudate, although further research with enlargement of the dataset is necessary to make the rheometer effectively deployable for potentially other extrudate characteristics.  相似文献

The oxidative stability of liver pâté was investigated in relation to different doses of rosemary extract (RE) and sodium nitrite. Colour stability, lipid oxidation (TBARS) and concentrations of ascorbic acid, α-tocopherol, carnosic acid and nitrite were measured on the batters before cooking and on the cooked liver pâté before and after exposure to light and air for 48 h at 4 °C. Results showed that the use of RE significantly reduced lipid oxidation, whereas it had no effect on colour stability. Ascorbic acid and nitrite concentrations were significantly higher and lower respectively when RE was added. RE dose-dependently increased the concentration of carnosic acid. Lower sodium nitrite doses resulted in significantly lower nitrite concentrations and slightly lower TBARS values. It was concluded that in liver pâté sodium nitrite levels may be lowered to 80 mg/kg without negatively affecting colour and lipid stability and that the use of RE may help in maintaining lipid stability.  相似文献

The effect of dimensionality and nanostructure on thermoelectric properties in Bi2Te3-based nanomaterials is summarized. Stoichiometric, single-crystalline Bi2Te3 nanowires were prepared by potential-pulsed electrochemical deposition in a nanostructured Al2O3 matrix, yielding transport in the basal plane. Polycrystalline, textured Sb2Te3 and Bi2Te3 thin films were grown at room temperature using molecular beam epitaxy and subsequently annealed at 250°C. Sb2Te3 films revealed low charge carrier density of 2.6?×?1019?cm?3, large thermopower of 130???V?K?1, and large charge carrier mobility of 402?cm2?V?1?s?1. Bi2(Te0.91Se0.09)3 and (Bi0.26Sb0.74)2Te3 nanostructured bulk samples were prepared from as-cast materials by ball milling and subsequent spark plasma sintering, yielding grain sizes of 50?nm and thermal diffusivities reduced by 60%. Structure, chemical composition, as well as electronic and phononic excitations were investigated by x-ray and electron diffraction, nuclear resonance scattering, and analytical energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy. Ab?initio calculations yielded point defect energies, excitation spectra, and band structure. Mechanisms limiting the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT for Bi2Te3 nanomaterials are discussed.  相似文献

To close the issue, guest-editors Rafi Segal and Els Verbakel curated a discussion with Stan Allen, Margaret Crawford, Marcel Smets and Sarah Whiting, and put some provocative questions to them: What constitutes public space in the contemporary city? Can the public sphere still exist in the urban context? Should public space be fought for by architects and urban designers? Or, as Allen proposes, is it the landscape architects alone who have been quick to realise the potential of the empty spaces in our cities as a ripe terrain for change? The construct validity of the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) psychological demands scale in relationship to physical demands has been inconsistent. This study aims to test quantitatively and qualitatively whether the scale validity differs by occupation. Hierarchical clustering analyses of 10 JCQ psychological and physical demands items were conducted in 61 occupations from two datasets: one of non-faculty workers at a university in the United States (6 occupations with 208 total workers) and the other of a Belgian working population (55 occupations with 13,039 total workers). The psychological and physical demands items overlapped in 13 of 61 occupation-stratified clustering analyses. Most of the overlaps occurred in physically-demanding occupations and involved the two psychological demands items, 'work fast' and 'work hard'. Generally, the scale reliability was low in such occupations. Additionally, interviews with eight university workers revealed that workers interpreted the two psychological demands items differently by the nature of their tasks. The scale validity was occupation-differential. PRACTITIONER SUMMARY: The JCQ psychological job demands scale as a job demand measure has been used worldwide in many studies. This study indicates that the wordings of the 'work fast' and 'work hard' items of the scale need to be reworded enough to differentiate mental and physical job demands as intended, 'psychological.'  相似文献

We analyze information dissemination in random geometric networks, which consist of n nodes placed uniformly at random in the square ${[0,\sqrt{n}]^{2}}$ . In the corresponding graph two nodes u and v are connected by a (directed) edge, i.e., u is an (incoming) neighbor of v, if and only if the distance between u and v is smaller than the transmission radius assigned to u. In order to study the performance of distributed communication algorithms in such networks, we adopt here the ad-hoc radio communication model with no collision detection mechanism available. In this model the topology of network connections is not known in advance. Also a node v is capable of receiving a message from its neighbor u if u is the only (incoming) neighbor transmitting in a given step. Otherwise a collision occurs prompting interference that is not distinguishable from the background noise in the network. First, we consider networks modeled by random geometric graphs in which all nodes have the same radius ${r > \delta \sqrt{\log n}}$ , where δ is a sufficiently large constant. In such networks, we provide a rigorous study of the classical communication problem of distributed gossiping (all-to-all communication). We examine various scenarios depending on initial local knowledge and capabilities of network nodes. We show that in many cases an asymptotically optimal distributed O(D)-time gossiping is feasible, where D stands for the diameter of the network. Later, we consider networks in which the transmission radii of the nodes vary according to a power law distribution, i.e., any node is assigned a transmission radius r > r min according to probability density function ρ(r) ~ r ?α . More precisely, ${\rho(r) = (\alpha-1)r_{\min}^{\alpha-1} r^{-\alpha}}$ , where ${\alpha \in (1, 3)}$ and ${r_{\min} > \delta \sqrt{\log n}}$ with δ being a large constant. In this case, we develop a simple broadcasting algorithm that runs in time O(log log n) (i.e., O(D)) always surely, and we show that this result is asymptotically optimal. Finally, we consider networks in which any node is assigned a transmission radius r > c according to the probability density function ρ(r) =  (α?1)c α-1 r ?α , where α is a constant from the same range as before and c is a constant. In this model the graph is usually not strongly connected, however, there is one giant component with Ω(n) nodes, and there is a directed path from each node of this giant component to every other node in the graph. We assume that the message which has to be disseminated is placed initially in one of the nodes of the giant component, and every node is aware of its own position in ${[0,\sqrt{n}] \times [0,\sqrt{n}]}$ . Then, we show that there exists a randomized algorithm which delivers the broadcast message to all nodes in the network in time O(D . (log log n)2), almost always surely, where D stands for the diameter of the giant component of the graph. One can conclude from our studies that setting the transmission radii of the nodes according to a power law distribution brings clear advantages. In particular, one can design energy efficient radio networks with low average transmission radius, in which broadcasting can be performed exponentially faster than in the (extensively studied) case where all nodes have the uniform low transmission power.  相似文献
